The "Sacred Circle", the Mandala

Mandala means "sacred circle" in Sanskrit and many eastern cultures have specific mandalas for different visual meditations. Working within a circle is the most natural form in which to create meditative artwork.

The mandala has been referred to as the reflection of one's psyche at the moment and a representation of a potential for change and transformation. They are a form that often emerges spontaneously in peoples artwork and can be seen as a sign of change.

If you are interested in making your own mandala, take a large piece of paper (81/2 x 11 at least) and use a plate to trace the size of the circle you desire to work within. You may also choose to take your mandala outside the lines of the circle extending all the way to the edge of the paper. I personally begin in the center of my mandala and work out from there. This is a completely personal project though so you begin wherever feels the most comfortable.

Draw and fill in your mandala, either inside the circle or all of the paper. Keep drawing until the image seems complete to you. 

You will instinctively know when it is as it should be. 

Colors are very important in a mandala so make sure to finish it off with colors that please you and make your mandala stand out.
